Located northeast of the Mexico–U.S. border, Hudspeth County is named for Claude Benton Hudspeth, a state senator and United States Representative from El Paso. 

In the late 1800’s this area of Texas was discovered as explorers looked for new routes from Texas to California. The San Antonio-to-El Paso leg of the San Antonio-California Trail was surveyed in 1848 under the direction of John Coffee Hays, a captain in the Texas Rangers and a military officer of the Republic of Texas at the time. Hudspeth was known then as a place travelers passed through, on their way to somewhere else. Hudspeth County was formed in 1917 from El Paso County, Texas. Sierra Blanca was named the county seat, and interestingly has the only adobe courthouse in Texas.

There are no building restrictions in Hudspeth County, so it’s a perfect time to get in and build whatever your heart desires. You can even camp or RV on your property without restrictions. Just make sure you have a way to haul out your waste. Build a well, have a water haul and holding tank, or other similar option. 

Texans are known for their independent spirit, so come on down and join the ranks in living off the grid. It may not be the “Wild West” anymore, but there’s no reason you can’t saddle up, throw on a pair of cowboy boots, and holler “yee haw”, as you call Hudspeth County home.
