Room for the Whole Plan, Not Just Part of It
Back home, every lot you price is a half acre with a neighbor's fence on three sides and a rulebook on the fourth. Out here you get 20 flat acres east of Van Horn, TX, and the only fence line you'll think about is the one you decide to put up.
The ground is level, which makes the first weekend easy: back the camper in off the dirt road and you're set (the shovel can stay in the truck). There's room for a garden, a shop, a shed for the tools, and eventually the cabin you keep sketching on napkins, with no county deadline on when you build. The county sets no limit on how long the RV stays, either, so you can work on the place a weekend at a time.
Van Horn is about 22 minutes west for fuel, groceries and a hot meal. Downtown, the Hotel El Capitan, designed by the El Paso architects Trost & Trost, opened in 1930 and still rents rooms after a full restoration, which makes it a handy spot to park the in-laws when they come see what you've been up to.
The trade is power. None runs out this far, so plan on solar, a well or a hauled-water tank, and an approved septic system for wastewater (West Texas has never once run short on sunshine).
Plenty of folks talk about having room to breathe someday. Out here, someday comes with twenty acres attached.
