Your Own Elk Camp, a Short Walk From the Forest
Every hunter has a public-land story that ends with somebody else's truck already parked at the trailhead. After enough of those, a piece of ground with your name on it starts to look like the smart move.
This is 10 flat acres in the Sycan country north of Bly, OR, with the Fremont-Winema National Forest about 800 to 900 feet to the west (one private parcel sits between you and the boundary). Set camp, park the trailers, and glass the timber at first light. A dirt road runs along the north side, out to Yellow Pine Road, and Verizon held on the property when our photographer was out. R-5 zoning allows one home whenever you want a cabin, with no HOA and no deadline.
Bly is about 35 minutes away. A few miles out sits Sycan Marsh, a mile-high meadow of more than 30,000 acres where up to 10,000 tundra swans stop each spring, and the OC&E Woods Line State Trail passes just to the north.
The trade is that the 2021 Bootleg Fire burned through here. The brush is gone and some trees won't make it, while others are already greening back (the open ground is easy to walk and easier to glass).
Ten acres, a forest next door, and a camp nobody else can claim. That's the whole idea.
