Christmas Lake is the area’s namesake. Today it is a dry lakebed, and is attributed to pioneer Peter Christman and his family who had property and cattle in the area. It’s unclear whether their surname was misspelled intentionally or unintentionally. In the 1960’s a developer decided to try and take advantage of the novelty of the name. He planned and marketed a lake community complete with a lodge, golf course, airport and even rodeo grounds. Today you might find yourself on Candy Lane or Mistletoe Road as you drive around town.
While it has become a popular retirement destination, the area is still primarily an alfalfa farming community. You’ll find a quaint downtown with access to grocery stores, motels, restaurants, and a gas station. When you need a larger shopping destination, the outlying neighboring towns offer additional amenities or you can head in to bigger cities like Bend for a Walmart run.
